Lying Tiger & Shaq Oh My (Do All Famous Men Cheat?)
For the past week and a half people have been hitting me up with the same question: What’s your take on the whole Tiger Woods scandal? Truthfully, I haven't really been paying that much attention to it. Well, I have but there’ve been so many damn updates it’s hard to keep track.
All I know is it somehow snowballed from Tiger being involved in a “car accident” over Thanksgiving weekend to his wife “rescuing” him from the car wreck to his wife actually causing the accident and “allegedly” hitting him in the head with a golf club to Tiger cheating on her to Mr. Golf Pro practicing his stroke with a shitload of mistresses.
Seriously, like WTF?
It seems like five times a day I hear some new development and scandalous secret that has transformed Tiger from Mr. Perfect Athlete to Mr. Average Joe. At the end of the day, though, that's all Mr. Woods, or any other celebrity for that matter, is—a regular person. Sure famous people have way more money than you or I and get followed around by paparazzi all day, but before all that (unless they’re born into fame) they were just like you or I coming up—regular.
Cheating isn't anything new. Unfortunately, people do it every day (sometimes twice). It’s your neighbor, you’re co-worker, the person in the car next to you, the person ringing you up at the grocery store or even your significant other. Any one of these people could be creepin’, so what makes you think that someone like Tiger wouldn't?
Why, because he seems like such a nice all-American?
Pfff. That's all image, and if I’ve learned anything from American advertising is that image is nothing; thirst is everything. From the looks of it, good ol’ Tiger was plenty thirsty.
I can’t front like I wasn’t initially surprised by news of Tiger’s affairs, but the more I thought about it, the less shocked I was. Truth be told, because of his fame he's probably more likely to have a sidepiece than most because beautiful women (and the ones he cheated with) are probably throwing themselves at him constantly. Even the most faithful man (or woman) might have a moment of weakness if there’s a constant barrage of booty being thrown their way.
Fame and power are synonymous, and like Peter Parker's uncle Ben so eloquently told him, "With great power comes even greater responsibility." Unfortunately, most men aren't super heroes; just mere mortals with weak will power.
Such is the case with Mr. Woods.
I think the shock value with his situation is Tiger's clean-cut image, combined with the fact that his private life has been pretty much private over the years. Other than the fact he plays golf and considers himself Cablasian (Caucasian+Black+Asian), I don't know much about Mr. Woods. However, now I know way more than I need to.
Forgive me if I mix any of the “facts” up, but from what I've heard Tiger's cheating was done very sloppily. In addition to a two-year-old daughter and a 10-month old son, he also has several jump-offs on the side. This includes Australian getaways, his best friend booking flights, reality show “stars” and a whole bunch of other stuff I won’t get into here. The point is Tiger was double dipping his 69-iron in multiple golf bags along with his wife's. SMH. But, hey, what do you expect, he's a man of power.
From Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson to Bill Clinton and Elliot Spitzer to Joey Buttafuoco and Hugh Grant, we’ve seen it time and time again. A man of power cheats on his wife with another woman. In some cases she takes him back or “forgives” him, but in others she hits him where it hurts and goes for his wallet.
This is where a thing like a prenup would come in handy. Apparently Tiger and his wife have one, but they’re actually rewriting it for the sake of the marriage (read: payoff, kinda like the rumored $1 million mistress No. 1 got to go mum in the press).
There are countless reasons for why someone would stay with a cheating spouse, (UPDATE: Apparently Tiger's wife recently moved out) like maintaining a false public image, money, the kids, whatever, there are two folks in particular both men and women can learn from.
First off is, Shaq’s wife, Shaunie. The soon-to-be former Mrs. O’Neal is a paper gangsta for real. Not only did she take the kids and split when she found out Shaq Daddy was getting his mack daddy on with a stripper/actress who he’d have explicit sexting sessions with, in addition to “smashing” the wives/fiancées and baby mamas of other NBA players, she filed for divorce in L.A., where it’s almost a guarantee that she’ll get half of his bankroll.
On the other side of the fence, I have to give it up to my man David Letterman. I think he has proven to be the smartest celebrity of them all when it comes to cheating. When he was being blackmailed for money by a whistleblower about his office affairs, Dave didn’t buckle. In fact, in a preemptive move he went on national television and just came clean about his adultery.
Sure his name was in the headlines for a few weeks but there really wasn’t any real backlash—at least not a damaging one. Far be it for me to condone cheating because I’ve done my own dirt before, but id like to think that no matter the reasons or whether or not you’re famous or not, honesty is the best policy. Hopefully, now that the truth is out we can all get back on course. FORE!!!!
What’s your opinion on this whole Tiger debacle? Where you surprised by the affairs because of his squeaky-clean image? Do you think this will affect his career in the long-run? Do you think his wife is wrong for staying? Could you stay with someone that had that many jump-offs? Do you think that most athletes, politicians and men of power are prone to cheat? Do you think most of their wives know but just look the other way because of the money? What do you think of Shaq’s scandals? Do you agree that Letterman was the smartest one because he never lied about anything and was honest from the gate?
Speak your piece…
