Are All Priests Child Molesters? (Immorality in the Church)

Priest molestation

As someone who attended Catholic school for 12 years, I guess I’m lucky in that a priest never molested me. Because based on the constant church scandals that keep making headlines, it’s something that happens quite often and I find that disturbing.

The sad part is that allegations of child molestation in the Catholic church have become so commonplace that a lot of people don’t even bat an eye anymore. It’s become a running joke in standup comedy routines, but ain’t a damn thing funny about a child being robbed of his/her innocence.

A few weeks ago I came across a YouTube video of a priest in Brazil named Father Luiz Marques Barbosa, 82, getting a blowjob from his 19-year-old altar boy. Apparently, a 21-year-old man that claims to have been molested by the “holy man” since he was about 12 caught the act on tape with a hidden camera he placed in an open window.

According to Newser, “Local police say the priest was already under investigation for sexual abuse when the video was aired by a news channel. Two other Catholic priests in the same city in northeastern Brazil are also under investigation for having sex with boys and young men.”

When a local news station asked Barbosa about the tape and accusations, would you believe he had the nerve to say, “Who has never committed a sin?”

Wow!

But wait it gets worse. When they asked him specifically if he had ever abused boys, Barbosa said, that was a question he could only answer in confession.

I know in America a man/woman is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but Barbosa lives in Brazil and he sounds hella guilty with that statement. On top of that, there’s the damn video footage ala R. Kelly.

Here, see for yourself.

Everything is blurred out and in a foreign language but it still might a little NSFW (Not Safe For Work).

During dinner with a group of friends last weekend (see, I go out) the conversation touched on recent reports that child molestation within the Catholic church is some sort of unspoken act that the higher ups ignore. According to a New York Times article, Reverend Lawrence Murphy is suspected of abusing 200 deaf boys in the U.S. from the ’50s to the ’60s. Although the Vatican was made aware of the accusations, Pope Benedict, who was the then-Cardinal, didn’t remove him from his posts.

One of my boys at dinner made the point that a lot of times accused priests simply get moved from one church to the next rather than being ousted or even getting help. In fact, he suggested that a lot of these men know they’re gay or attracted to young boys, and try to use religion as a way to purge themselves of these “sinful” desires. Problem is, living amongst other men and impressionable young people only exacerbates things.

What people tend to forget that no matter if someone’s wearing a collar or any other religious signifier, they’re still human and by design we’re all flawed. So no amount of prayers and confessionals can stop their carnal desires from getting the better of them and they misuse their position to persuade young boys to do their bidding.

It’s just one sick web of sin that’s been going on for decades and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. That’s not to say that every priest exhibits this kind of behavior but damn if there aren’t a lot of bad examples. And reports that the Vatican and even the Pope are not just aware of these actions but actually covering them up is even more troubling.

How are we supposed to trust these supposed spiritual leaders when they themselves are guilty of some of the most despicable sins? Do you believe that there’s a massive cover up within the Catholic church? Why do you think that so many people with a predisposition for child molestation find themselves in the church? Do you believe that a lot of them do try to use religion as a way to purge their desires? Do constant reports of misconduct within the church weaken your faith in religion? Are you even surprised anymore when you hear about another priest abusing a young boy? What do you think should happen to priests found guilty of abuse? Could you ever forgive someone that molested your child or yourself?

Speak your piece…

I have heard for years about the things that go on in Catholic churches.. I am not Catholic so I do not know the whole inter-workings of the Church or the priests there. I do believe, however, that there has been a lot of cover up of molestation because of the "image" that the Church wants to uphold.

I do not believe that these reports weaken my faith even though my beliefs are not of those that the Catholic church upholds. I think so many people are caught up in "worshipping" or praying to the priest or pope that they loose sight that these are human beings. From the few details I do know about the Church, it seems as though people pray and confess to the priests which puts them in the position of God, so they are heartbroken when they realize that these men are just that- men (as in human).. I am Christian and there are times when preachers and Christian entertainers (i.e Kirk Franklin) have been found to "fall short of the glory" but that does not weaken my faith because at the end of the day, Christianity preaches your relationship with GOD, not man because we know man is subject to failure.

I also heard that these men look to boys (and sometimes girls) as sexual relief from the pressures of taking a vow of celibacy. It has been said they start off in seminary at really young ages and to vow to do something that is perfectly natural is something that they dont realize what they are getting into. I dont know if this is the sole reason but I believe that this COULD contribute to it..

As someone who is Catholic and attended Catholic school all of my life I am shocked, disappointed, ashamed that these stories keep coming up and that they are getting covered up by the Pope. I personally am not aware of any priest or friends/family that have been molested by priests but I don't agree with it.

It is not right that the Catholic church can condemn me for using birth control, or having an abortion, (things that affect/protect me) but not punish leaders of the church for robbing someone (young children at that) of their innocence.

Religion Lesson: Catholicism is part of Christianity and we are also taught about our relationship with God. A priest is a model for human behavior and a conduit for the message the same as a pastor in a church. We as Catholics are aware that priests have faults.

I do believe the Church covers it up, which makes sense if you perceive the Church as an institution created to set standards and rules upon masses. Which, I am leaning towards myself. This could also be why they don't seem to be proactive or doing their part in eliminating these people from their system.

I expect spiritual leaders to be role models and lead by the examples/lessons they are teaching... but at the same time, I understand we're all human and capable of mistakes no matter how divine or "chosen" we are.

I've tried to see a pattern in why this seems to have happened so much in the Catholic church and the only thing I can theorize is that the denouncing of something human and natural leads to such a deviant expression (for consenting adults).

Molestation though is more than a mistake, it's a sickness. I think a lot of times the molesters have been victims themselves so just go on to repeat the cycle. In Toledo there was also a case a some years back about a priest who killed a nun in 1980. Actually, he's still trying to appeal his sentence I believe. That of course is beyond a mistake also and I wouldn't even know how to psychoanalyze that situation either.

It's possible these people are driven to church because they're trying to purge their past/traumas, but it could also just be the sickness giving them an easy access to more victims.

This is why I am more and more becoming of the notion that I don't need a middle-man between me and God, which is basically what I look at religion as...

The church, and this is just my opinion, is what a lot of people use as a mechanism for power with a lot of ill intent. I'm not Catholic, but I'm sure this goes for any denomination.

  • Chocolate Drop

I swear me and my fiance were talking about this yesterday...cant remember why though.

I dont know why they like to molest little boys...never little girls.

Im agnostic so this church stuff is not my thang. And every time I read stories like this, it makes me want to run far away from religion as possible...f*cking hypocrites.

I feel that these priests should be punished far worse than they usually are.

And I was molested when I was young by 2 family members, and I never held anything against them for some reason. It was so long ago that I cant remember why not. But if someone ever molested my future children, they would get the beatdown, or get killed...depending on how bad the abuse was.

All Clergy are suspect, Catholic or otherwise. May not be child molestation, but something else like adultery, extortion, or just plain corrupt. Any Clergy, pope who are bajilllionaires and still can look at poor people give in the baskets are hypocrites. And (pun intended) they are all just watching their own asses. Sadly enough, another bajillion people support these organized molestation corrupt pools as their base of faith. So sad, so sad.

  • Gotta Do Me

I've been reading this blog for about a year and have only commented once, however I feel compelled to comment on this topic because I was molested as a child and not only that...I married a man whom I loved dearly and thought he loved me just as much, only to learn that he started molesting my daughter a few months after we were married. No he wasn't a priest, but the betrayal is ultimately the same. I don't think these this "sickos" realize that their acts of pervision are acts that bring about lifetime traumatization. My life will forever be affected by this perversion and so will my daughter's.

It is because of these acts that I will never trust a man around my children and it is because of this perversion that my daughter constantly struggles with having a healthy relationship.

Children have a hard enough time with all of the other strugges of adolescene, without having to worry about their innocence being stolen by those placed in positions of trust.

NWSO thanks for continuing to keep it real!

I did 12 years of Catholic school time too and one of the conclusions I arrived at was not to let these folks get too close. I had a wonderful education but I had enough sense of self that I could resist the "mind fuck" of their indoctrination and thus made me a poor candidate for any actual fucking.

Like Marcooseler says, "All clergy are suspect", I agree wholeheartedly. Religious groups by virtue of their requirement of blind fidelity are breeding grounds for exploitation. Chid molestation by Catholic clergy does not surprise me the least, I always had a sense that some of the clergy people I came in contact with all those years in school weren't all right. I could never pinpoint what it was exactly but my spidey sense kept tingling around some individuals.

From my parents down, I have always seen authority figures as the enemy in some ways and so I was probably a poor candidate for any exploitation along with being the resident atheist. Wanna be a outcast, try being an aethist in a religous school.

The true crime in my view is the lengths to which the church leadership went to protect the pedophile priest. There have been reports of child abuse in every type of religious organization, the catholic church are apparently the only ones who felt it necessary to shield the individual clergy folks from prosecution and worst of all move them around to other areas to again commit the same crimes. Those acts are not about religion those are about corruption. Any student of history know the Roman Catholic church has a long tradition of institutional corruption and criminality.

No trust here, anyone who has trust does so out of massive ignorance. They choose to be blind because it suits there purpose.

My theory on the disposition to molest within the clergy is 2 fold. Pedophilles want unfettered access to children and the insular nature of religious organizattion promote the necessary cloak of secrecy for those types of behavior. I think religious communities provide both of those.

The inaction of so many of the parents of the children molested has surprised me more often than anything the catholic church has done. some took payoffs and some in their blind faith have basically sacraficed their children to preserve their own personal beliefs. You molest my child and there is no way u walking around footloose and fancy free, it would be "A Time To Kill". Nuff said.

I understand that a vow of celibacy may cause one to "act out" but that doesn't explain the proclivity for underage children or same sex victims. a normal adult male acting out should-- should-- bet drawn to an adult female, or at the least, another adult male, not children.

Since this happens frequently enough to not be an anomaly, I wonder what is it about the Catholic church that causes this. And yes, at this point, I do feel something about the church plays a role.

Are pedophiles drawn towards Catholicism? Is it something about the environment? Is it encouraged among clergy? Do they have a wink-and-nod knowing that it will be covered up? How does it happen so often?

Now, granted, I know it's not happening in a large percentage of churches, that we know if, but it happens too much to just be brushed aside as a coincidence. It happens so much that it's no longer shocking.

  • DC Man With a Plan

There is a tendency to react as if this is happening ALL the time and everywhere, but it really is a small minority of priests that are engaged in this type of stuff, so I do not think it is prudent of US to 'side-eye' all priests and pastors any more than we typically would/should. It is most disappointing that churches react as MOST institutions do when they encounter employee corruption that project negative images: they engage in cover-ups: That goes for the military, judiciary, commercial businesses and all manner of government institutions. Mankind does not naturally face controversy that likely will result in negative attitudes and publicity head on--we tend to try to "manage it" to retain our good image and name, but it often back fires and the "truth" sees the light of day. Men run the church and though we want to hold them to a higher standard--they're still men at the end of the day.

  • DC Man With a Plan

I whole heartedly agree with Rastaman: It is corruption and malfeasance in the highest degree to move priests around, not acknowledge their crimes and not get them treated for what is obviously a sickness. This is the disgrace that the Catholic priesthood specifically shoulders. And you'd think after ALL of the revelations that occurred in the USA, that they'd have checked ALL churches worldwide...but naw, that would be too much like right! Now there are allegations from Scotland, Britan? WTF? Are U kidding me? THEY didn't take any proactive actions to root this shyt out? GMAFB!

  • lola289

Look past the wrongs that ppl are committing and know that the bible does not preach these things...

Its terrible that members of this group have been doing these crimes for X number of years?, decades?, centuries? Is this a conspiracy? Are they really going to protect the Catholic church?

After 12 yrs of being mind fucked (lol@Rastraman) by the Catholic church...I went through a period of denial about EVERYTHING that was associated w/ Jesus & God. I studied different religions and went from agnostic to atheist... So I understand some of these view points.

But later I realized that God was not at fault... He gave ppl a choice. And they made their own decision. Whether we like it or not.

At the end of the day...the old saying is true.

"Whats done in the dark will come to light!"

  • my 2 cents

I personally think the problem is that we put to much into our spiritual leaders. They are not GOD dont talk about the priest and dont talk about the pastor!! We need to understand as many people have said prior these people are human and the flesh is weak and they have not made good choices. We need to speak with our children and let them know this behavior is not ok and they need to tell and not let this go on for 12+ years.
I have been raised in the church since I was a child and I believe that we all need our personal relationship with GOD and we are not going to get it throught the priest or the pastor ect.... Stop letting the mind fuck you and build your own relationship with GOD.

I have to agree with DC Man With a Plan; these are the acts of a minority, let's not be so quick to generalize. With that said, leaders within the Catholic church clearly conspired to cover up the misdeeds of the priests. What's more disgusting is that this has occurred all over the world. Church leaders need to be held accountable, and it's time for the church to take a good look at itself and make some changes.

  • Jessica J

This made me sick to my stomach. I really almost threw up. Naked this is not just worth a blog for people doing it in Catholic Churches, this is worth a blog for everybody that's been molested. It's sad to say that by the time your sixteen, most teenager will have been molested, touched, raped, etc by a family member, friend of the family, babysitter. It just upsets me being someone who's been through many of those things no child should ever have to go through. This is a issue everywhere, not just the churches. And the sad part is, what can anyone do to stop it from happening again?

  • QuoteMan

This simply confirms how less logical and more hypocritical the teachings of the Catholic Church are. I truly believe it would do most of these kids a world of good if the church was to revise its stance on celibacy among the priests; remaining strictly within the parameters set out centuries ago seems ridiculous IMO, and clearly this hasn’t been working.

The Catholic Church and all of Christianity need to let go of their age-old ideologies; I do have an ideological and other substantial disagreements with virtually all religions. However, I’m neither an atheist nor agnostic; I do believe in a higher power, karma, cause and effect. These are what I live by.

  • msz. lonely girl

I find it weird that you mostly only hear about these molestations in Catholic church and no other church or religion
Maybe its more to it than it being covered up maybe it trickles down from an old cult like tradition that some of them still follow
There's so much going on in the Catholic churches and we have no idea
But I do know its disgusting!
its sad that people are so blinded by their faith to allow this to happen and continue to happen it could've been stopped a long time ago I believe

  • DC Man With a Plan

Quoteman makes a good point I want to second. The notion that priests in the Catholic church must remain celibate seems ridiculous to me. It's one thing to accept celibacy on a personal basis for one reason or another at different points in your life, but to be required to live that way in order to be “called?” And to not allow ANY married men to serve as a Catholic Priest? Something is VERY wrong with that picture. You're looking at women all day long, counseling women, have SOME trying to "temp you" into breaking your vow and you can't marry? THEN you have all of these molestation cases and STILL crickets on the subject of priests and celibacy? smdh

I THINK THESE PRIEST ARE GOING TO BURN IN HELL FOR WHAT THEY'RE DOING. I HAVE BEEN HEARING ALOT ABOUT MOLESTATION IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND EVERYTIME I'M STILL SHOCKED. BUT WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS HOW THESE OLDER BOYS 12 AND UP LET IT HAPPEN UNLESS THEY'RE GAY ALSO I MEAN IF
THE PRIEST IS THAT OLD 82 AND THE BOY 19 HE OUGHT TO KNOW ITS DEAD WRONG AND NOT DO IT OR HE MUST BE GAY TOO. AT 19 NO ONE COULD FORCE ME AND HE IS STRONGER THAN THE 82-YEAR OLD I HOPE. SO THIS RAISED MY EYEBROW WHEN I READ THIS
