Do You Remember Your First Love? (No One Comes Close)

I know today’s Wet Wednesdays, but I’m not really in a Wet Wednesdays kinda mood. (You can still CLICK HERE to buy your Wet Wednesdays tees though). In the wake of recent events, my mind has been elsewhere and I was reminded of this song called “My Furst Luv” that I wrote back in my MC days.

Yeah, before I was NWSO blogger extraordinaire, I was Graze Kul (pronounced Grey Skull) lyrical juggernaut.

**Waits for group laughter to cease***

At any rate, I think you’ll dig the words, especially if you like Common’s “I Used to Love H.E.R.” Without further adieu, here goes…

FIRST VERSE

From the very first time that I seen you
I loved being with you for you—’cause you was my boo
And you always kept it true
I was like your Sun, you was like my Planet
Loving you, was like the 5th Commandment
But sometimes, I took you for granted
Other girls came between us, but you understand-ed
’Cause your love was unconditional—mad special
You gotta space in my heart and my mental
You was instrumental in making me the man that I am
And when I held ya hand, I felt safe, secure
Your love was pure (uh) 100-percent
And I thank you, ’cause you always represent

CHORUS
Common vocal sample scratched in:
"I never knew throughout my life she would be there for me on the regular"
Artist ad-lib:
"Uh, my first love."

Repeat 4x

SECOND VERSE

Older woman, younger man
Most heads couldn't understand
The bond that we had;
Through the good and the bad,
The happy and the sad
You was always there, had time to share
Used to whisper in my ear tryna take away my fears
You taught me about the world,
And you was different, from any other girl
You used to stimulate my mind, even though sometimes
I used to suck on your breasts, but it wasn't about sex
It was more than just physical
We was connected like an umbilical
You used to call me your little miracle
Taught me to be spiritual
And supported me when I chose to be lyrical
And be Mr. KUL

CHORUS

THIRD VERSE

Through the thick and the thin,
You had my back like rearview
That's why I care for you
I got years to share with you
’Cause I wanna be there for you, whenever you need me
I care for you deeply
Words can't explain, so I try to maintain
And put my thoughts down into a lyrical frame
Even though times will change
Yo, my feelings for you will always remain the same
I gotta eternal flame in my heart
And just seeing you will ignite a spark
You come first in my life—even before my wife
No one can take your place
’Cause you always treated me right
I reminisce on the times I couldn't sleep at night
Because of nightmares
But when I woke up, you always right there by my side
You make a brother feel happy to be alive
That's why I took time out so I could write this rhyme
To let ya know that you'll be always on my mind
’Cause a woman like you is very hard to find
"No doubt!"
And the woman that I'm talking about is my mother
(I love her, I love her…)

CHORUS

Then fade out…

—Graze KUL, Mother's Day, 1996

Do you consider your mom to be your first love? How often do you take time out to reflect on all that she’s done for you? Do you sometimes take for granted the sacrifices that your mom has made for you? How do you show your appreciation on a regular basis? How would you react if your child gave you a song like this as a gift? What did you think of my teenaged rap skills? How much do you love your mom?

Speak your piece…

Love it :) ....I'm gonna show this to my son so he knows he isnt the only one who is in love with his mama

  • Peajez

That was beautiful... I feel that way about both of my parents.., I always say that the first man to truly love me is my father, he showed and continues to show me how a woman should be treated and I guess that's why I'm still waiting for that special one to love and respecte both physically and emotionally... Great work MC Graze Kul lol

  • Shannon

Actually, my father was my first love. My mother and I were never really close and I was always a daddy's girl. My father demonstrated to me how a man is supposed to treat women and he is the yardstick against which I measure the men I meet.

My mother has her faults, but I love her. I often wish could be closer, but maybe one day...*sigh

My nephew may only be 10 months old, but he is in love with his mama. He won't go to anyone or stay with anyone but his mama. She's the only one who can feed, change, bathe, dress or hold him; he will not go to anyone else. It's such a problem for my sister that she doesn't have a job because he won't stay with anyone. I think she's spoiling him and needs to put her foot down, but I mind my own business; after all, that's her baby.

  • distinguishedgentlewoman

This is BEAUTIFUL. And I know exactly where you're coming from. When I was a little girl, I had three first loves: my mom, dad, and grandfather. They were my nurturers, my protectors, and my best friends.

  • MultipleHeart

Beautiful work, very touching. Reminds me of a poem I wrote for my Mom on a Mother's Day

But if truth be told I think as a baby I was fascinated with my big sis. According to my family my first word was her name.

    Awww!! Very sweet.

  • bogart4017

Every guys first love is his mother period. There is not a day that goes by that i dont think about the sacrifices she made for me and my brothers. Those are debts that we can never repay. I always try and stay in contact with her and never fail to tell her that i love her when i call.

  • Ajanee_Mone

AWWW! I Love it! I actually consider my grandmother my first love, that is because my mother was always working and my grandmother watched over me majority of my childhood. Don't get me wrong I love my mommy ( yes I still call her mommy lol!) but my heart was broken when my grandmother passed.

  • Shequita

I loved the song and the "teenaged rap skills." Very sweet. I sometimes take my mom for granted, Im always reminded by how much I need her when she's not available. As a baby in love at first sight, by 5 you are no longer her friend. By 10, you think you can do it all alone. By 16 you think you know better. After you have children of your own OR around your late 20's you realize you've got so much more to learn and Mama was right all along!

  • TJ

Love it!!! I have to agree with Ajanee_Mone. My grandmother would be that one for me. I miss her so. My mom was busy doing her thing, so I missed out. My grandma is/was the sweet in sugar for me. She is what makes me want to be a lady beyond the simplicity of the word.

  • rwifey

master of the universe, the movie is on as i type this....honestly...hhhahahahahahhahaha

i'm closer to mine than anyone else, and all fam, mainly dad just have to accept it, he even pointed out that the love i share with her is sacred, it is

  • Soulyn

My granny was my fist love. Miss her so. I followed her wherever she went. She was my best friend. Granny taught me to work hard for whatever it is that I want. She is my inspiration.

  • lola289

awww my grandma was my 1st love also...but now I loves my moms! lol

  • QuoteMan

Only had everyone’s first love been Mama duke or Grandma and not homegirl or homeboy down the block – all hearts would be filled with enduring love and compassion. Hence less appalling atrocities.

Over time, any other love is bound to change. However, the love of Mama duke or Grandma is one I synonymous with the first law of energy: it can be neither created (emulate) nor destroyed but transformed from one state to another.

    You the best Mama!!!!

  • msrahrah

NSWO did you perform this to your mom? I can imagine the smile on her face if you did! I can't wait for my son to sing or rhyme to me (think reggae-style is highly likely)!

He's four and he tells me that when he's older he's going to marry me, because he loves me so much. I have explained to him that he can't marry me (which results in a great amount of tears!).

My first love was my Pa (grandfather), he looked after us as my parents worked full-time, as well as my dad being heavily involved in the ANC in exile (prior to them coming in power). I have a very similar personality to my dad so I clash with him a lot. My mom and I only get along well since I became a mother myself. I love them both, but my Pa has that special place!

In Buddhism they believe that the spirit of the soon-to-be conceived child watches over the parents at the time of consummation, and whatever person they are more attracted/drawn to, they are born the opposite. So if the spirit is drawn to the woman, it will be born a male-child. I guess the idea goes hand-in-hand with the term's "Mama's boy" or Daddy's girl"!

  • http://nwso.net/ NWSO

Perform, nah, but I played her the tape. I got like four-five albums worth of material on cassette tape. LOL

Now, if I only had a working tape player.

  • CarteBlanche

I wish I could feel what you all feel for someone! My mother is a waste....as far as parenthood is concerned. My grandmother raised me until I was in middle school. Then fostercare.

The only person I loved was a man, and even he disappointed me greatly. LOVE- thats a hard one!

  • CarteBlanche

    HAD TO ADD THIS:
The "man" was my first love...and I still think of him!
It didnt work out, he wanted a momma and not a wife/girlfriend!

  • lola289

    *hugs4CarteBlanche*
Love is in you no matter what... regardless of the person.
    Luv you first!

  • Southern Poise

Very beautiful expression of your first love. Mother's love is like no other. I can only hope my son feels as much love for me.

  • CarteBlanche

    Southern Poise:

is it safe to assume that you are being sarcastic?
How your son feels for you, will definatgely depend on how you treat, rear, and provide.
If so it totally not appreciated
